New Presidential Spouse Gold Coin

I got an e-mail from the US Mint yesterday stating they were now selling the new Presidential Spouse Gold Coins for the first two spouses, Martha Washington and Abigail Adams in both Proof and Uncirculated Versions. I didn't really want one because I thought the design and over all attractiveness was lacking.

I went to look tonight just to see what they cost, and apparently they are already sold out. The website says they were to be available beginning June 19th, but the website now says they are unavailable.

Have these ugly coins already sold out? How can that be possible. If it is true, I want one. :banghead: If they are just having technical difficulties and they haven't started selling yet, then I don't want one because I don't see how anyone could find them attractive other than that they are made from gold. :thumpdown

I am not speaking from knowledge - merely guessing - but the Mint has been behind all year - I suspect these coins are behind too and have not yet gone on sale.

You say you don't want them because they are ooogly -- then you say you want them because they're sold out (that everybody wants them):haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: Either the mint is way behind or they have or will be bought up......by coin dealers! If they're not real gold, then I for one am not interested.

What coin would they mint if Hitlery became president? A Bill Clinton coin??
Maybe they would need to change the theme to "Presidential Partner Gold Coin" Maybe we'll see Janet Reno on one?

Even if they ARE real gold - I am not interested!!!

There are far more interesting gold coins - and I for one do not believe for a second that people bought THAT many gold coins they sold out, when I have never met a person who knew more than about 4 presidential wives! The only one that might would be Jackie O and even then, I doubt it.

Frankly, I'd rather have a gold round than a useless series like this!

Re: New Presidential Spouse Gold Coin

I just checked E-bay to see if they are being sold there. Yes, they are already being sold, and a couple of the entries said the coins sold out at the mint in the first 3 hours!!!

It looks like those who are selling are trying to get two to three times the original cost.

I also checked past auctions, and it appears there are quite a few selling with the "buy it now options" at some pretty hefty premiums.

Although the coins are not very attractive, I may have to keep track of when the next set comes out. I am not above making a little profit when the opportunity presents itself. Or maybe not. Is it considered prostituting oneself if you buy an ugly coin just to sell it for profit?

This is covered in the legislation. There would be a Bill Clinton coin. And if there was no spouse while the president was in office, they use another emblem of Liberty.

Yes, the coins are 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold.

I think some of them will be popular, e.g. Martha Washington, Dolly Madison, Mary Todd Lincoln. Others, not so much.

My biggest complaint is that these 1/2 ounce gold coins have a nominal value of $10, while the 1/2 ounce Eagles have a nominal value of $25. This total disregards the notion that gold has some self-consistent value. I wonder if they did this on purpose.

Does anybody know the price the mint was charging for these? I can see paying a small premium (maybe slightly more than an Eagle or Buffalo), but not much more.

I think you are confusing prostitution with realtors - then again, maybe you aren't.:dontknow:

They base the value of gold on two different things. Modern bullion usually gets a $50/oz price (AGE, Gold Buffalos). But they also make commemoratives that are based on the gold content and value of the pre-1933 coinage (the yearly commemoratives like the Jamestown $5 piece, etc). So they often have $5 commemorative coins with roughly 1/4 oz of gold. It appears that they more or less followed the commemorative guidelines, but that they made it pure gold and slightly more weight. I think I recall something about them doing something to distinguish them from normal commemoratives and apparently that's what they did.
